Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. There are so many incredible images associated with this film it’s difficult to know where to start or stop, but the ones that generally stick in my mind are those that highlight the amazing set design, and the lovely update of the 60′s air travel experience to space. One thing that jumped out is the recurring theme of symmetry in many of these, both as interiors and exteriors. Kubrick himself was heavily involved in the production design of the film (along with production designer Anthony Masters and art director Ernest Archer), choosing many of the furnishings from noted designers of the time whose work has since ascended to classic status, such as Eero Saarinen’s pedestal tables.
